The iPhone 8 is just moments away from being released and we are excited. Larger screenspace, the possible exclusion of touch ID recognition, the complete removal of the home button and rumored water resistance are just some of the high level exciting features.
The removal of one of the last vestiges of an analog age, the home button, frees up the entire bottom of the phone for extended screen space. Though we haven’t seen the mechanical home button since the iPhone 6, the fixed finger pad with haptic feedback provided a slow transition into a home buttonless world.
As far as the iPhone 8 screen, it’s shaping up to look like the LCD screen is getting replaced with a plastic OLED screen, which means a thinner device. It also means truer colors, less battery consumption and higher contrast ratio. The OLED plastic allowed the designers to extend the display all the way to the edges of the device, bezel be gone. This means brighter images, better images and MORE image. It also means increased screen size, without increasing the size of the device itself. The phone will probably be sized near the iPhone 7 with the screen display size of the iPhone 7 Plus- probably close to a whole 5.15”.
Consistent with the iPhone 7’s water resistance the new iPhone 8 will be resistant to quick (hopefully accidental) submersions in water, rain drops, and splashes. The iPhone 8, though, is proud to boast a new 1P68 Certification-- meaning it will technically be resistant at a maximum of 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes and that it needs no additional protection from dust, sand or dirt.
Some exciting things are happening IN the phone too, starting with the inclusion of the 10-nanometer A11 chip, which means more efficiency, more speed and hopefully less charging. It could, might, hopefully, also mean wireless charging, and induction based, facial recognition to replace the current fingerprint security measures and front and back lens optical stabilization.
Augmented Reality is the future and Apple is not missing a beat with iOS11’s new ARKit, a complete toolset for creating, maintaining and experiencing Augmented Reality. The new phones will be preloaded with iOS11 and with the operating system and upgraded hardware, as well as the huge, uninterrupted, bezel-less screen will no doubt create an amazing Augmented Reality experience with no additional set up. It’s exciting to think about the market for AR experiences that will be the byproduct of the updated capabilities and the ARKit toolset.
